Can We Create Our Own Happiness?

I love TED talks.

You can literally find a TED talk on ANY subject.  Not only that, there is even a channel on Apple TV!  You can watch TED Talks in a marathon with topics ranging from Astrobiology to Origami and everything and anything in between.

The talk below by Shawn Achor is one of my very favorites and a worth while watch.

Why am I encouraging you to watch a talk on Happy Secrets to Better Work when I am an Anxiety Therapist?

When I work with women and young athletes who are struggling, often times the work is about encouraging and challenging clients to see things from a different perspective.

The technical psychology psychobabble term for what I often do would be ” reframe”;  I am constantly challenging my clients to see situations in a way that they may have not thought about before.

Have you thought of it this way?

If I have a client that is feeling like she is doing something wrong as a mother when her kids act out at home and are “perfect” at dads house, I may say something like ” what if it was actually the opposite?  what if the fact that your children act out when they are with you was a sign that you were doing everything right?  What if that is an indication that they can show all of their colors to you because they know it’s safe to be themselves? ”

How different would it feel to you if you were this mother?  How would that impact the way you view yourself as a parent, and in turn impact how you see the behavior?

What I love about this talk is that while the main audience is those looking to be happier and more productive at work, the concepts and research support the work that we are doing in the therapy office day in and day out.

Have you ever had the experience of keeping a gratitude journal?  If you write down 3-5 things daily that you are grateful for, after a while you start to notice things to be grateful for at every turn.   Then, the snowball begins…

Can you find your Happiness Advantage??

Comment below and let me know how you have changed your view of the world or situations.
